In addition to some superb supporting characters, the movie also features some of the spy gadgetry that’s become a staple of the genre, ranging from jet packs and underwater cars to a microwave that somehow turns stacks of money into McDonald’s cheeseburgers-alongside what’s perhaps one of the weirdest, most memorable villain armies of recent movie history: a squad of giant thumbs. The movie also features a strong supporting cast, including Danny Trejo as their disillusioned ex-spy uncle, Alan Cumming as a children’s TV host and multifaceted antagonist, and Tony Shalhoub, delightfully, as his evil assistant. When the parents are called off on a mission together, Carmen and Juny quickly follow suit, discovering a safehouse where they learn the secrets of their family’s past. Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino star as the two adult spies, raising two children, Juny and Carmen. With direction by early 2000s staple Robert Rodriguez, the film takes a fairly standard premise of two spies, in love, on a mission together and flips it on its head-two spies, married, on a mission where they get captured and their kids are thrust into the action. It may not have quite the artistic heft of some of the other movies on this list, but since its release in 2001, Spy Kids remains an undisputed family classic. Still, one man’s risk is another man’s gain and the movie takes full advantage of this danger, using Cruise’s riskiness to craft highly impressive shots-no wires required. Cruise continues to execute all his own stunts with apparent ease, though director McQuarrie qualifies this film’s stunts as some of the most dangerous in Cruise’s career. It’s one of the best reviewed films of the franchise, with Variety calling it “the series' most exciting installment yet.” The action sequences in Fallout are also some of the best in the franchise- compact, sleek, and thrilling, with all of the traditional shots we’ve grown to love, including a motorcycle chase, a bathroom duke-out, and a high-stakes helicopter sequence. The film grossed $791.1 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing film of the Mission Impossible franchise. It draws on the plots of prior movies, specifically Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, but also works as a stand-alone film for those that haven’t seen the rest of the movies. Starring Henry Cavill and Tom Cruise, the movie continues to follow Ethan Hunt’s adventures as an IMF agent-this time, fighting against the the terrorist group The Apostles as they attempt to use plutonium cores to create weapons of mass destruction. But of all the films in the franchise, Mission Impossible: Fallout is widely considered to be the franchise’s best.
